Can exchange 2010 be installed on the same machine

I would assume it is not best practices, just wondering if anyone
knows of a sure-fire issue that would arise.

You can if you wish, but like you say - it's not ideal.....
If the node fails, it's taking "everything" with it.......

I have advised customers in the past to use 1 machine for the AD and
then 1 machine for the EX2010 nodes, if they have a tight budget... NO
use of DAG either in this situation.

Also, virualization is an option to create more nodes - though again
if the physical machine goes down the VM software runs off, your out
of action!
